Doctoral Degree Candidates in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
BHN offers opportunities for Doctoral students in Clinical and Counseling Psychology at the level of advanced practicum or internship. There are two different APA-accredited internship programs:
- The APA-accredited Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology at BHN The Carson Center in Westfield, MA
- The APA-accredited Multicultural Psychology Internship Program at the School Street Counseling Institute in Springfield, MA.
Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology at BHN The Carson Center
BHN The Carson Center offers an internship with two different tracks in Western Massachusetts. The mental health track is a half-time (20 hours per week) two year (2,000 hours) APA-accredited internship. The internship program is located within Adult Outpatient Services at BHN The Carson Center in Westfield, MA (formerly listed as the Carson Center for Adults and Families), a not-for-profit community mental health clinic that provides general and specialized mental health services for adults. The second track – our medical integration track is a one year full-time (2,000 hrs.) APA-accredited internship position structured so that 20 hours is at BHN The Carson Center and the other 20 hours is in medical integration at a BHN affiliated primary care setting in the Westfield or Springfield area.
The stipend is $12,000 per year for the half-time Mental Health internship and $24,000 a year for the full-time Medical Integration Internship.
In order to be considered, applicants must have a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a related field (e.g. clinical social work) as of the time of application. Applicants are also expected to have completed two or more clinical practica and accrued a minimum of 1500 hours of clinical practicum experience by the start of internship, including a minimum of 500 intervention hours (direct service) and 100 assessment hours (administration, scoring, interpretation, and write-up of reports).
For applicants to be considered, they need at least three years of doctoral coursework in clinical or counseling psychology before applying. In addition, Qualifying Examinations need to have been passed and one’s Dissertation Proposal needs to have been approved by the application deadline of December 1.

In addition, BHN The Carson Center offers opportunities for an Advanced Practicum for 4th-year Doctoral students who have successfully completed two previous practica experiences as part of their Doctoral Program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. During an Advanced Practicum, Psychology trainees receive two hours a week of individual supervision and attend many of the same seminars as the Psychology Interns. Multicultural Psychology Internship Program (MPIP)
This APA and APPIC accredited internship is full-time (40 hours) for one year (52 weeks) for a total of 1,960 hours. The stipend is $24,000 for the year. Applicants need to have earned a master’s degree and have completed at least three years of doctoral coursework in a Psy.D. or Ph.D. program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology to be eligible and must be bi-lingual (English-Spanish).
The multicultural doctoral internship in professional psychology is offered at the School Street Counseling Institute (SSCI), a community mental health clinic in Springfield, MA. SSCI provides outpatient community mental health services to Latino/a children, families with a wide variety of mental health and substance use issues. SSCI staff includes professional psychologists, clinicians, school counselors and medication providers who offer linguistically and culturally-competent services in English and Spanish.
The Multicultural Psychology Internship Program also offers a 6-month rotation in Medical Integration.
